I don't remember where I got the idea but I heard that military cadence helps with running and makes it more engaging.
I tried that this week and it makes running so much more enjoyable, while striking the monotony down (odd, no?)........
I don't know any cadences so I've been making up shit and mumbling freestyle cadence to myself.

I don't know about fun, but a friend is always challenging me to try and outdo his lap times/distance/pace or whatever else when running. Certainly keeps things interesting.

I find the cadences are helpful to break the monotony of running. Some of the military ones are...amusing.
There are some resources for cadences online; if you search Google for "Jody Calls" you'll see some resources, including some on YouTube.

Once I completed my initial training I had to make myself stop running to cadence in my head lol. But yeah it helps with motivation and making up funny ones can be comical.

I hate sports that make me sweat, and thus I am limited to the pool. But I keep trying to beat my lengths every time I go in. My longest is 1.6km in 1 hour.

Thanks! I've joined a tri-swim practice group, mostly for fitness but I'm keeping my options open for the season open. I found out last time I went that the swim portion of the triathlon is 4km. O_O
But I just keep putting one arm in front of the other, and really enjoying it.
Someone recommended finding a running partner and trying to beat his/her times and that's a capital idea. Competition is one of the best motivators.

Amen man.... I don't have a running partner, so I simply use made-up cadence.
I do autocross and do track events and I like to find that ONE person at every event I want to gun for with my driving

I have a whole bunch of cadences on my mp3 player for when I do go for a run. Helps me stay focused and at one speed for a good distance.

While I've no military experience, we did cadence runs in the police academy. Those were, by far, my favorite PT days. We had to keep it clean, which meant we had to get inventive or modify military cadences. The group runs were at a slower pace, but we paid for it by having to belt out cadence. It put a little extra strain on the lungs. Good times!
I was pretty chubby back then, too. Eight years later, all I want to do on my weekends is lace up my running shoes and let the miles pass under my feet.
